Giving an Aquarium as a Gift

By Shirlie Sharpe, About.com

Looking for a gift that will last long after the holiday or birthday? An aquarium is an excellent gift for young and old alike, and can provide years of enjoyment to the recipient.

Who To Give One To?
First and foremost, don't give an aquarium as a gift unless the intended recipient has already asked for one, or expressed an interest in one. As wonderful as the hobby is, it's not something that should be dumped upon those who aren't interested. However, it can be a perfect gift for many people.

Children who are clamoring for a pet but can't have a dog or cat, might love their very own fish as much as any pet. Aquariums are an excellent gift for people who live in apartments, dorms, or other types of housing where dogs or cats might not be allowed (or be practical). Even the elderly enjoy fish, and an aquarium might be just the thing for a relative in elderly housing. Be sure to find out if they are allowed to keep them, as some places do have rule prohibiting any kind of pets - even fish.

Last but not least, that those who already have an aquarium might enjoy a second (or third) aquarium as a gift. Or they might like having some accessories or even things as mundane as cleaning supplies. It's a very addictive hobby, and once bitten by the bug fish keepers invariably want more.

Purchase Quality Equipment
A common trap to fall into is purchasing a package deal because the price tag looks appealing. Some packages are good - others are marginal at best. If the equipment is low quality it may have to be replaced, or worse yet, it may result in losing fish. Spending a little more up front for better equipment will often save some dollars down the road.

What is Needed?
Your equipment list will vary a bit depending on the recipient. A first time fish keeper must have all the components as well as maintenance items. If the cost for purchasing all the items on the list is prohibitive, ask friends and/or family members to purchase some of them. That way the recipient will have everything they need to be successful. Click on the link below for a checklist of items you'll need, along with a recommendation for what is best to buy. If in doubt e-mail me or post in the discussion forum. We'll be glad to help.
